Glossary of Terms
- PRECISION MEDICINE
It is a medical approach that uses genomic, clinical, and environmental information to personalize the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease in each patient.
It is based on the analysis of individualized information to make more accurate and effective medical decisions.
- GENOMICS
It is the study of genes and their function.
Genomics analyzes the structure, function, evolution, and mapping of entire genomes, including genes and non-coding DNA sequences.
- DATALAKE
A datalake is a centralized repository that stores large amounts of raw data in its original format.
Unlike traditional databases, datalakes allow for the storage of heterogeneous and unstructured data, making it easier to analyze and further process.
- COHORT
In the field of medical research, a cohort refers to a group of individuals who share a common characteristic or experience and are followed over a period of time to study how that characteristic or experience affects their health or medical outcomes.
- SECONDARY DATA USAGE
It refers to the use of data collected for an original purpose for the purpose of conducting additional research or analysis not directly related to the original purpose.
For example, using data from electronic medical records to conduct epidemiological studies.
- NODES
Each of the territorial structures in which participants will be recruited for the cohort and will be given the tests and questionnaires established within the program.
- SEQUENCING
It refers to the process of determining the exact order of components (usually nucleotides) in a DNA or RNA molecule.
Sequencing is essential for the study of genetics and genomics, as it allows us to know the genetic information contained in genes and other segments of DNA or RNA.
- PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
It is a medical approach that focuses on disease prevention and health promotion through interventions and anticipatory measures.
Preventive medicine focuses on identifying and addressing risk factors and underlying causes of disease before they manifest themselves clinically.
- PRIMARY PREVENTION
It refers to the measures and actions taken to prevent the occurrence of diseases or injuries before they manifest themselves.
This can include healthy lifestyle habits, vaccination, early detection of risk factors, and health education.
- PREDICTIVE MEDICINE
It is an approach to medicine that uses genetic information and other risk factors to predict the likelihood that a person will develop certain diseases in the future.
This allows preventive measures to be taken or treatment to be customized based on individual susceptibility.
- RRI (RESPONSIBLE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION)
It is an approach that promotes citizen participation, ethics, transparency and sustainability in scientific research and technological innovation.
It seeks to ensure that research and innovation are carried out responsibly, taking into account social values and the needs of society.
- SEQUENCING INFRASTRUCTURES
These are the specialized facilities and equipment used to carry out DNA or RNA sequencing.
These infrastructures include state-of-the-art sequencing equipment, data storage systems, and bioinformatics analysis software needed to conduct high-quality genomic and genetic research.
